Heller Votes Against Raise For Congress

Feb28

Nevada’s District 2 Congressman Dean Heller voted against a congressional pay raise for 2010. Specifically, Heller voted to eliminate the cost-of-living adjustment scheduled for members of Congress in fiscal year 2010. The scheduled cost of living adjustment for 2009 was already rescinded as part of the Omnibus Appropriations Act.

The automatic cost-of-living adjustment for members of congress dates back to the Democrat take-over following the Watergate scandal. Congressman Heller says he supports “stand alone” legislation for Congressional pay raises. Heller clarified his position on the 2010 pay raises in a recent statement:

Congress must address the housing crisis, increase Americans’ consumer confidence, and balance the budget before it even considers giving itself a pay raise.

The vote passed 398-24.
